Travel advice

Specific requirements for anyone who has travelled in Australia in the past 14 days

Are any of the following relevant? If so, email Health.Response@newcastle.edu.au

If yes
    1. Travel from Victoria

From 12.01am on Friday 7th August anyone who enters NSW from Victoria will be put in mandatory hotel quarantine for 14 days, at their own expense. Anyone returning to NSW from Victoria must return through Sydney Airport from where they will be escorted to an authorised quarantine hotel.

2. Have you been in a location in NSW where there has been a notified confirmed case or in an area where a public health alert has been issued?
3. Additional advice for those attending clinical placements:

Our placement partners and facilities have established their own independent guidelines for placements to proceed in response to COVID-19. This helps them manage issues and risks to their patients or residents in a rapidly changing environment. If your placement provider asks you not to attend placement in their particular facility, please follow that advice, and contact your Clinical Placement Unit or your Course Coordinator who can work with you to identify the best next steps for your clinical placement.

Update to declared hotspots that prohibit entry to Queensland

From 1am on 8 August 2020

The Queensland border will be closed to all individuals travelling from NSW. Information on exemptions is not currently available. However, all work travel to QLD is to be suspended as at this Saturday until further notice.

How to get tested

Testing Centre open on Callaghan Campus

NSW Health is operating a drive-through testing clinic at our Callaghan campus until end of 2020. Those wishing to be tested must contact the clinic on 4964 7497 to arrange an appointment, prior to attending.

Are the University campuses open?

All of our campuses are now open to students and staff. As we have done throughout this situation, we will continue to monitor and rely on advice from the Federal Government and NSW Health in relation to our sites. We continue to reinforce social distancing and hygiene practices at all of our sites. You will notice signage around the University which indicates the number of people each space can accommodate, the seating capacity in our rooms, and markers showing the appropriate distance required to adhere to physical distancing requirements.

From 1 June, community borrowers at our Libraries and visitors for pre-approved activities are welcome (by invitation). Restrictions are in place for all other external visitors.

Many of our retail outlets are also now open. Here is an up-to-date list of the revised trading hours for our campus retail outlets.

Are the University Libraries still open?

Library buildings are open to university students, staff and our Community Borrowers membership holders. These members no longer require swipe card access. Social distancing measures are in place to help keep everyone safe. You will notice signage around the Library spaces that indicate the number of people that each space can accommodate and the seating capacity in our Group Study rooms has also been reduced so please check the room information before Booking a Study Space. At this time, no general community members or non-university students can access libraries.

Can I still visit the University at the moment?

All of our Australian campuses remain open for staff and students, and libraries for community borrowers. From 1 June 2020 a number of other visitors will be welcome on our campuses by invitation only.

Are you cancelling community events at your campuses?

In accordance with the latest Government advice, large student and community events of more than 500 attendees will be cancelled and we will reassess in July. We have also cancelled a number of smaller events happening on campus. We think it’s better to hold non-essential events at another time and will be in touch with people as new dates are confirmed.

Will graduations go ahead?

In light of limiting public gatherings to fewer than 500 people, we will postpone our April graduation at Ourimbah and the July graduation ceremony at Callaghan. Eligible graduates will be deemed to have graduated in absentia and we will invite them to a ceremony in the second half of 2020.

Eligible graduates will still receive their qualifications on time, it is only the ceremonies which will be postponed.

I’m a contractor that works at your campus. How can I get more information?

Please talk to your University contact. If you need further information, email health.response@newcastle.edu.au and read the information on this website.

Increased hygiene measures

Hand washing is the most effective way to protect yourself.

Keeping work and study environments clean may also help to stop the spread of COVID-19 and other infections such as the common cold.

We ask students, staff and visitors to our campuses take the precautions advised by the public health experts including:

  • Hand washing for 40 - 60 seconds with soap
  • Using hand sanitiser
  • Following coughing and sneezing etiquette

Please observe and comply with health-related signage around the University.
